Dental Health Services Victoria believes oral conditions have some of the highest prevalence and incidence rates of all health problems in Australia, particularly in rural areas where visits to the dentist are more likely to be for a dental problem rather than as a preventive measure.

Dental conditions are mentioned in the Women’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy (page 7) under the title Chronic illness and injury: The evidence. It is noted that dental conditions are the second most common cause of hospital admissions in Victoria behind diabetes complications (DHS, 2004-5).

Dental Health Services Victoria notes that oral health is briefly mentioned in the Men’s Health and Wellbeing strategy under the sub-heading Prisoners and again in relation to Service usage and Aboriginal people.We feel it is appropriate to draw your attention to the importance of oral health and some of the shared risk factors with other health conditions.
