Enjoy Easter treats and avoid tooth decay

15 April 2019

With Easter comes the temptation of tasty treats, but it’s important to consider the impact all those sugary treats can have on your teeth.

Dental Health Services Victoria’s Chief Oral Health Advisor Dr Martin Hall said that tooth decay is entirely preventable with a few simple steps.

“Reducing the amount of sugary foods and drinks in your diet and brushing regularly are the best steps for better oral health,” Dr Hall said.

“Tooth decay can start when you consume food and drinks containing sugar and starches.”

“Bacteria in the mouth feed on sugars from foods and drinks. These bacteria produce acid, which damages the outer surface of the tooth. This can lead to dental decay or holes in the teeth.”

Dr Hall’s top tips on enjoying Easter eggs and preventing tooth decay:

Enjoy your Easter eggs at mealtimes, rather than between meals.
You naturally produce saliva while eating and this helps neutralise those acids, wash away any chocolate and reverses the early effects of tooth decay.

Drink a glass of tap water after eating your Easter eggs or lollies.
This also helps to wash away the sugars and acids which cause decay. The fluoride found in tap water also helps protect your teeth.

Brush teeth with a soft toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste.
Brushing teeth is important because it removes plaque. Brush at least twice each day.
