Santa claus brushing his teethThe big fella in red will stop by the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne on Tuesday (December 15) as he commences final preparations into his Christmas Eve journey.

Santa will have a dental examination to make sure he is in the best possible shape as he prepares to jump down millions of chimneys with yummy treats waiting for him in millions of kitchens around the world.

He will also be meeting some children in the waiting rooms to make sure they know Santa is aware of the importance of good oral health.

Figures just released by Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) show January as a peak month in the RDHM emergency department which may be an indication that some tend to go overboard with their holiday season treats.

Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) CEO Dr Deborah Cole said the holiday season was not a reason to become complacent about your oral health.

“No one is trying to be the party police but there are a few quick tips to remember for staying on the right track during the festive season,” said Dr Cole.

“Most important is to try and brush after each meal and pay attention to the amount of sugary drinks and sweets you are consuming.

It doesn’t matter if it’s during Christmas or other food oriented holidays like Halloween or any other time. Moderation in what you eat and drink can have a good effect on your teeth and gums along with routinely brushing.

“Don’t take a holiday from your oral health.”
