New video challenges Aboriginal community to ‘rethink’ their soft drink

22 January 2015

DHSV is proud to support the Rethink Sugary Drink campaign to help emphasise the amount of sugar in sweetened beverages such as soft drink, energy drinks and sports drinks.

As part of the campaign, a new video has been created to highlight the serious health impacts associated with sugary drinks and encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria to go for fluoridated tap water instead.

Watch the video here:

With around 16 teaspoons of sugar in a 600mL bottle of soft drink, the video stresses how much sugar is loaded into sugar sweetened beverages and how drinking them regularly can lead to weight gain and health problems such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer and dental problems.

The video has been developed by the health organisations behind Rethink Sugary Drink, including DHSV, in partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation Inc (VACCHO).

Sugary drinks, or sugar sweetened beverages, include all non-alcoholic water based beverages with added sugar such as non-diet soft drinks, energy drinks, fruit drinks, sports drinks and cordial.

Throughout February, DHSV will be sharing ways to rethink sugary drink and drink well in 2015
