In the lead-up to 2014 World Oral Health Day (on 20 March), Dental Health Services Victoria is inviting Victorians to send a ‘selfie’ of themselves brushing their teeth in an unusual place for the Smile for a Selfie photo contest.

CEO of Dental Health Services Victoria, Dr Deborah Cole said that there were times when people had to brush their teeth outside their bathrooms because they were on a holiday or just camping somewhere overnight.

"The message is to keep up with good oral health habits no matter where we are, or how busy we are," Dr Cole said.

"It’s about making brushing teeth fun, because it is important that we brush our teeth every day."

Dr Cole said dental health affects much more than just our teeth and gums.

"It can have an impact on your social life, your mental health and has been linked to other health conditions like heart disease, diabetes and cancer," she said.

World Oral Health Day will be celebrated on March 20. The focus of the day, this year, is to remind young and old the importance of protecting teeth throughout life.

To take part in the Smile for a Selfie photo contest upload your selfies (self-portrait photographs) via our  Smile for a Selfie online form or email them to healthysmiles@dhsv.org.au.
