Vampires need dental check-ups too

31 October 2013

Dental Health Services Victoria is reminding Victorians to take care of their teeth this Halloween – whether you’re a vampire, a zombie or a human.

The reminder comes as Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) Chief Executive, Dr Deborah Cole, says tooth decay is five-times more prevalent than asthma among children.

"Research shows that tooth decay is the most common health problem in the country,” said Dr Cole.

“By the age of fourteen, more than half (58 per cent) of Australian children have decay affecting their permanent teeth – compared to the approximately 10 per cent of the population who have asthma.

“Data also shows that 21 per cent of adults over 65 have none of their own natural teeth remaining. And, of those who do still have their natural teeth, 47 per cent wear dentures.

“This frighteningly high figure is why $8 billion is spent on dental services in Australia each year.”

But Dr Cole added that tooth decay is preventable.

“The basic message is always the same: reduce the amount of sugary foods and drinks in your diet, and brush regularly,” she said.

Dr Cole had the following advice for trick-or-treaters:

  • Clean your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Drink fluoridated tap water.
  • Chew sugar-free gum to increase saliva in your mouth.
  • Parents should brush and floss their child’s teeth until the child is around six years old.
  • Visit your oral health provider every year to find any problems early.

Dental Health Services Victoria is the leading public oral health agency in Victoria. It is funded by the State Government to provide dental and oral health services to all Victorians, and offers government-subsidised dental care to eligible members of the public…including vampires.
