Do I need to change my diet when I have braces on my teeth?

Braces are attached to the surface of your teeth and can be easily broken. Hard, crunchy or sticky foods can break or damage brackets and wires. Nail biting, and chewing on pencils, pens and foreign objects must be avoided.

Examples of hard, sticky foods to avoid

  • All hard and sticky sweets
  • Crusty bread /rolls, pizza crusts
  • Muesli bars
  • Ice
  • Nuts
  • Apples need to be cut into small pieces
  • Carrots need to be cooked or grated
  • Chewing gum
