These new resources are designed to assist GPs and practice nurses in providing evidence-based oral health recommendations to young children and pregnant women.

We recently launched two updated fact sheets as part of the Healthy Families, Healthy Smiles program. These resources are designed to assist general practitioners (GPs) and practice nurses in providing evidence-based oral health recommendations to young children and pregnant women.

Pregnancy and oral health in general practice

Supporting healthy pregnancies includes supporting the oral health of pregnant women.

Pregnant women commonly experience oral health issues during pregnancy. As they are more likely to see a GP than a dental practitioner during their pregnancy, this makes GP visits an opportune time to offer an oral health screening, advice, and referral to a dental practitioner as needed.

This fact sheet for GPs and practice nurses highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy mouth during pregnancy and provides evidence-based recommendations for patient care. Access the fact sheet.

Preventing early childhood caries in general practice

Every child should have access to a ‘lift the lip’ examination before the age of one. By carrying out these exams, GPs and practice nurses play an important role in prevention of early childhood caries.

This fact sheet for general practitioners and practice nurses' outlines evidence-based recommendations for providing oral health screening, referral, and preventative advice to families with young children.
